Mitchif Heritage Keepers is a Native led nonprofit organization that seeks to create an awareness of the Metis culture and place in Montana's history. The non profit group was establised as a 501c3 nonprofit organization in 2018. It is comprised of dedicated Metis elders, scholars, musicians and historians.
Because the Montana Metis have no land based reservation or place to archive their historical documents or artifacts, it has been a challenge to share their heritage. The people have striven to preserve their heritage through informal gatherings where their music, history, culture and language are shared.
Mitchif Heritage Keepers now formally hosts the annual Music and Art Festival gathering in Choteau, Montana. The 2018 gathering attracted over 250 visitors including Montana Metis, their regional relatives and nonnative guests. Twelve musicians entertained guests over throughout the event.
